02Welding Types and Methods

The most commonly used methods to join, cut, or fabricate metals are MIG, TIG, arc, and gas welding. Your service provider should have the equipment and trained crews to perform each accurately and efficiently. Here’s how they differ:

• GMAW (MIG welding). The industry workhorse — best suited for fusing mild steel, aluminum, and stainless steel, and recommended for thinner sheet metals and alloys.
• SMAW (stick or arc welding). Common in construction, manufacturing, and repair work. Professional welders use this method for thicker metals.
• GTAW (TIG welding). Best for projects that demand a high-quality, superior finish with little or no cleanup by grinding or sanding. It takes an expert to deliver outstanding TIG results.
